This is a multi-media project meant to honor the work and legacy of fashion designer, Rei Kawakubo. In mediums across print, mobile, web, and animation I was challenged with balancing two designer’s voices: mine and Kawakubo’s. Many people know Kawkubo’s work, but not her name. I aimed to tell the story of Kawakubo’s work through the lens of her reclusive personality: a quiet confidence that challenges our notions of fashion, gender, the body and beauty.
BOOKLET

This is a 16 page Booklet structured around 7 different dichotomies present in Kawakubo and her work over 7 different spreads. This booklet introduces the subtle tension of hand written type from a fine tip pen contrasted with clean, solid, neutral Helvetica to represent the bubbling power of her unsuspecting quiet confidence.
8.25 x 10.5 inches, 16 pages

POSTER
This is a large scale informational poster introduces Kawakubo and her work. Red polka dots are a common motif in Kawakubo’s work that are a great example of how she grants power and ferocity to things that we associate with being feminine or childlike. This inverted polka-dot block both deconstructs one of her pieces to reference the way her bold silhouettes deconstruct the body, and hide a portrait of Rei in the background, allowing the reclusive personality behind this bold work to subtly peek out
